JALOTOFU
TOFU OF FINLAND
Jalofoods has been steadily transforming the Finnish diet for over three decades. Founded in 1989 as Oy Soya Ab, the company had a bold mission: to bring the traditional art of tofu-making to Finnish stores. Since 2020, Jalofoods has exclusively sourced organic soybeans from Austria to ensure top-quality raw materials and support regional agriculture.

JALOFOODS
Jalofoods is a Finnish company founded in 1989, specializing in the production of Jalotofu in Tammisaari. The company’s official name is Oy Soya Ab and its primary market is Finland.
Jalofoods’ vision is to significantly increase the amount of plant-based products on consumers’ plates, offering delicious and diverse culinary experiences.
We produce healthy, delicious, and high-quality plant-based foods using traditional methods guided by our values. Jalofoods makes nearly one million kilograms of high-quality organic tofu annually – quite extraordinary even by international standards.
Our clients include the industrial sector, retail stores, wholesalers, large kitchens, and public services. Having been active in export markets from 2012 to 2022, we are now strategically revitalizing our export initiatives.
Production in Tammisaari
Tofu is produced at our factory in Tammisaari, where we employ approximately 30 people. We are a significant local employer and maintain an active dialogue with local stakeholders. Since 2022, we have operated a biogas plant that utilizes by-products from our production as raw material. The biogas produced covers nearly 60 percent of our energy consumption.
Improving our operations requires perseverance and careful monitoring. With an already low environmental impact, we continue to make incremental improvements. The high quality of our products and the company’s strong financial performance serves as a foundation for future growth and investment.
Over the last 35 years, we have developed an automated and streamlined operational model using innovative technologies and robots. The result is affordable, high-quality, and ethically produced tofu made in Finland.
Steady Growth
Our revenue has shown strong growth, particularly since the 2010s. Today, we are the market leader in Finland, with a turnover of 4.65 million euros in 2023. Since 2015, our revenue has more than doubled due to hard work and the growing demand for plant-based foods. We anticipate sustainable growth in the coming years as part of the broader increase in plant-based consumption.
We recognize the risks posed by climate and environmental changes to our business. We mitigate these risks through sustainable production practices and by promoting positive change in society.
JALOFOODS STORY
Jalotofu’s journey began 35 years ago when its four founders envisioned producing tofu, a staple in Asia for thousands of years, in Finland. At that time, tofu was relatively unknown in Finland, and we have worked hard since then to popularize it. We can rightly be considered pioneers in this field for producing the ‘Jalotofu of Finland’. Our tofu embodies the purity of the North, and we incorporate circular economy principles into our production processes.
Among the founders were Henrik Nyberg and Mikael Enberg, who wanted to promote a macrobiotic diet and its many health benefits. In 1993, Stig Westerlund assumed operational leadership and began developing the company commercially. He has been affectionately dubbed the ’Tofu Emperor’ of Finland (Yle interview: Efter Nio).
Award-Winning Jalotofu
Today, Jalofoods is renowned for Jalotofu. Made from organic soybeans using traditional production methods, Finnish Jalotofu is available in seven versatile versions catering to various uses and flavor experiences: Plain, Asia (soy-mirin), Marinated, Cold-Smoked, Soft, Roasted (shredded tofu), Plain Seasoned, and Asia Seasoned. The Cold-Smoked variety has won the Vege Award – as voted by consumers – twice (2023 and 2024).
Our earliest products were sold in the early 1990s at specialty stores like Ruohonjuuri, and later in almost all Finnish retail stores. Organic principles have been central to us from the beginning, and we have maintained these values throughout our growth and the evolution of our production methods. Initially, tofu was handmade, but today it is made in a highly automated factory using our innovative production methods.
Dedicated Employees
We leverage technology to produce a traditional product, monitoring our operations with hundreds of data points to ensure the highest quality and food safety. Quality is as important to us as organic integrity, and we hold certifications for both.
Quality and adherence to organic standards are equally important to us, and we hold certifications in both categories. Likewise, Finnish labor is a cornerstone of our company – as evidenced by the Key Flag symbol we have proudly carried since 1998. Our factory in Tammisaari is the heart of our operations and will be the main focus of our future growth investments.
In 2020, Jalofoods transitioned to using exclusively European organic soybeans for Jalotofu products. This change is appreciated by many consumers who prefer products with a low or neutral carbon footprint and locally sourced ingredients. Currently, 100% of our soybeans are sourced from Austria.
SUSTAINABILITY WHITHOUT COMPROMISE
Jalofoods’ business operations are founded on sustainable values, and we have steadfastly adhered to this principle from the beginning. All our partners are also committed to sustainable practices.
Our values:
- Sustainable Development and Growth: Our goal is to develop operations that support the well-being of the environment and people in a long-term and people-centric manner.
- Health and Taste: Our products are renowned for their high quality and great taste. Customers find them to be healthy, nutritionally rich, and delicious ingredients for everyday use.
- Fairness and Justice: Our operations are based on trust and adherence to strong ethical principles. We ensure equitable distribution of economic and operational benefits among all stakeholders in the value chain.
Climate Concerns
Tofu is inherently eco-friendly, with a significantly smaller carbon footprint than animal-based protein production. Many consumers opt for more sustainable food choices to lessen their environmental impact. Our products maintain a low carbon footprint, approximately 50 g CO²e per 100 g, which is remarkably low for a ready-to-eat item requiring cold storage, offering both nutritional value and environmental efficiency compared to processed protein sources. Link to Biocode’s calculations.
We have further reduced our environmental impact through careful monitoring, measurements, and calculations. The most significant reduction came from transitioning to renewable electricity in the early 2010s. Today, we recycle biowaste from our production in our biogas plant, which generates energy for our production needs. Additionally, we have been using solar panels for the past nine years.
We perceive sustainable practices as yielding more business benefits than hazards. The growing demand for plant-based foods driven by the necessity to feed growing populations is evident. Nonetheless, long-term challenges such as soil degradation and climate change may alter agricultural conditions, presenting potential business risks.
Responsibility Towards Employees and Customers
Specifically, our FSSC 22 000 food safety accreditation and B Corp certification reassure our customers of our quality and responsibility. We also continue to hold our organic food certification.
As an employer, we foster our employees’ growth through ongoing training, job rotation opportunities, and support for self-directed skill development, including apprenticeship programs.
We have opted for streamlined supply chains and invested in enduring partnerships. Soybeans are directly procured from a farmer-owned entity responsible for both cleaning and processing. Additionally, we have established dependable relationships with other spice suppliers and raw material processors.
Corporate Responsibility and B Corp Certification
As a prominent player in the food sector, our core principles of responsibility focus on ensuring food safety and reducing waste throughout our daily production processes.
Jalotofu’s sustainability objectives are categorized into four key themes:
- Responsible and high-quality organic sourcing
- Comprehensive climate and environmental stewardship
- A committed, content, and proficient workforce
- Crafting healthy, delectable, and nourishing plant-based foods
We have made great progress in advancing these goals in recent years. Further insights into the sustainability challenges of soy production can be found in our 2021 Sustainability Report.
In 2024, we attained B Corp certification, a milestone that will shape our future sustainability efforts. This accreditation demonstrates our commitment to the highest standards of accountability, transparency, and reliability for all stakeholders. It encompasses fair treatment of employees, sustainable raw material sourcing, and efficient supply chain management across all aspects of our operations, including governance, community impact, environmental stewardship, and customer relations. B Corp certification represents a rigorous sustainability framework, and we are dedicated to making steady progress in this area.
As part of the Humble Group, we actively align our sustainability initiatives with their framework and report regularly on our progress. The group’s sustainability program places a strong emphasis on ethical manufacturing and procurement practices, promoting better alternatives, and innovation that creates a positive impact.

TOFU: THE STORY OF A SUPERFOOD
The story of Tofu is one of transformation; of creating something extraordinary out of the mundane. Long held as a staple in Asian cuisine, it is the go-to plant-based protein choice for many in the Western hemisphere as well. Tofu is a nutritional powerhouse! Since its alleged invention in China more than 2,000 years ago, tofu has travelled across continents and become ingrained in cuisines all over the world. Here at Jalotofu, we pay tribute to this rich history by making sure that only the best ingredients are used in the creation of our tofu.
But what is this thing called Tofu and what makes it so special?
Tofu’s Composition and Texture
Tofu, also known as bean curd, is a remarkable food made from just three basic ingredients: soybeans, water, and a coagulant (usually nigari or calcium sulfate). Its texture ranges from silky smooth to hard and chewy, making it a versatile ingredient with a wide range of culinary applications. Silken tofu is optimal for soups and desserts, while firm tofu holds up well in stir-fries and grills, absorbing all flavors.
The Art of Tofu Production
Making tofu is an art form as much as a science. It begins with sorting the best organic soybeans, which are soaked, ground, and boiled to extract soy milk. This milk is then coagulated, separating into curds and whey. Subsequently, the curds are pressed into blocks of tofu, with the level of pressing determining the final texture.
How Tofu Can Change Your Life
Introducing tofu to your diet or increasing your tofu consumption can have profound effects on your health and well-being. Rich in high-quality protein, essential amino acids, iron, calcium, and other vital nutrients, tofu is a superfood. Studies have shown that tofu can help lower cholesterol levels, support heart health, and even aid in weight management.
For instance, a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that consuming soy protein, like that found in tofu, can significantly lower levels of LDL cholesterol. Another study in the Journal of Nutrition indicated that soy-based diets could reduce the risk of heart disease. The nutritional benefits of tofu are clear, making it an excellent addition to any diet.
Tofu is Cool
Beyond just being a nutritious food, tofu represents an ethical and sustainable way of living. It helps reduce reliance on animal products and thus promotes environmental sustainability. Moreover, producing tofu has a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to meat production, making it a greener choice for conscious consumers.
Tofu has also developed a cult fan base worldwide among A-list celebrities who praise its health benefits and versatility. Artists like Beyoncé and Ariana Grande have openly credited tofu for helping them maintain high energy levels and general well-being. The Oscar-winning actress, Natalie Portman and fellow actor, Joaquin Phoenix, frequently talk about how tofu is a mainstay in their diet. These endorsements from high-profile figures emphasize tofu’s status as a trendy, health-conscious choice that fits perfectly into a modern, active lifestyle.
What Makes Jalotofu Special and Unique?
We derive great satisfaction in making tofu that is exceptional in terms of flavor and quality. Crafted from nutritious, organic European soybeans and Finnish organic pulses, all our tofu products are made in Tammisaari, Finland, where tradition meets innovation.
We follow traditional production methods that are deeply rooted in the rich culinary heritages of East and South Asia – but with a Finnish twist.
We produce a unique taste profile that is both familiar and refreshingly new by fusing the pure, clean flavors of organic Finnish pulses. In addition, we prioritize quality and sustainability in our production method, guaranteeing that each piece of tofu is produced with consideration for the environment.
INGREDIENTS
Soybeans are our primary raw material. Since 2020, we have exclusively used organic soybeans cultivated within the EU for Jalotofu production. Currently, our soybeans are sourced from the eastern regions of Austria, where our partners grow organic soybeans.
We procure our European organic soybeans from a leading Austrian consortium comprising over 3,000 farmers. We are focused on building enduring partnerships with our agricultural collaborators
Commitment to Organic Soybeans
While we previously sourced organic soybeans from Brazil and the United States, we now prioritize European suppliers for both environmental and logistical benefits. This shift enables more frequent site visits and rigorous quality inspections, with our most recent visit to the farmers occurring in June 2024.
Our commitment to using exclusively organic soybeans is fundamental to our operations. We strive to transform the perception of soy from a feed ingredient to a high-quality component for human consumption (from feed to food), in collaboration with our partners.
Premium Sourcing
We use premium traditional Japanese organic soy sauce, renowned for its superior quality, authenticity, and exceptional flavor. Our product, Kylmäsavu, has been awarded top honors in consumer taste tests (Vege Awards) on two occasions.
We are dedicated to fostering long-term relationships with our partners, some of whom have been with us since the 1990s. As traceability becomes increasingly vital, we have consistently prioritized this aspect in our procurement practices. From the very beginning, we have actively engaged in the international market, leveraging our global networks to inspire innovation and deliver unique taste experiences worldwide.
